Guide 02

Family transitions

When a parent downsizes, sells or moves to assisted living, the decisions are practical and emotional at once.

Start early

The easiest moves are planned before a crisis. Begin by listening: what matters most about where they live, and what worries them?

Include everyone

Bring siblings and the person moving in early, so everyone hears the same information at the same time.

Know the options

  • Staying put with support
  • Downsizing to a single-level home or condo
  • Independent or senior living
  • Assisted living or memory care

A care manager, elder-law attorney or planner can help weigh the costs. I can explain how each choice affects the house.

Be gentle with belongings

Sort room by room and let your parent decide as much as possible. Photograph what can’t come along.
